Transgressive rocky coasts in the geological record: Insights from Miocene granitic rocky shorelines and modern examples

چکیده

Rocky shorelines are commonly punctuated, with alternating high relief cliffs and incised embayments which host “pocket beaches”. While multiple cases of ancient rocky associated low ravinement surfaces have been documented in the geological record, deposits formed pocket beaches joint-cut coves more rarely described. This poses question “are coastlines their not preserved or they previously overlooked? Here we document exhumed examples granitic shoreline systems diverse morphologies from Early Miocene northern Austria, compare them modern UK, Corsica, Spain Norway. The offer a good opportunity to characterize these sedimentary systems, provide diagnostic criteria for recognition discuss main controls on occurrence preservation rock record. From stratigraphic sedimentological analysis, its comparison examples, interpret that form get during rapid rates combined tectonic eustatic sea-level rise, along lithological, structural weathered “weakness” zones affected by normal wave energy conditions interrupted storms. These results mechanism predicting potential distribution transgression coasts, implications exploration around highs coastal management.

Variation in palaeo-shorelines explains contemporary population genetic patterns of rocky shore species.

Processes driving and maintaining disjunct genetic populations in marine systems are poorly understood, owing to a lack of evidence of hard barriers that could have shaped patterns of extant population structure. Here, we map two genetically divergent lineages of an obligate rocky shore fish, Clinus cottoides, and model sea-level change during the last 110 000 years to provide the first evidenc...

Geographic distance, water circulation and environmental conditions shape the biodiversity of Mediterranean rocky coasts

Ecological connectivity is important for effective marine planning and biodiversity conservation. Our aim was to identify factors important in influencing variation in benthic community structure on shallow rocky reefs in 2 regions of the Mediterranean Sea with contrasting oceanographic regimes. We assessed beta (β) diversity at 146 sites in the littoral and shallow sublittoral from the Adriati...

Exposition Wave - cut or water - table platforms of rocky coasts and rivers ?

Despite evidence that weathering plays a role in forming intertidal, estuarine, and fluvial rock platforms, many publications uncritically refer to “wave-cut” or “stream-cut” rock platforms. The alternative explanations of chemical weathering and physical water erosion of rock platforms have been debated since 1839. Our new approach to this long-standing problem introduces data from fluvial as ...

Implications of spatial heterogeneity for management of marine protected areas (MPAs): examples from assemblages of rocky coasts in the northwest Mediterranean.

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are increasingly used as a management tool to preserve species and habitats. Testing hypotheses about the effectiveness of MPAs is important for their implementation and to identify informative criteria to support management decisions. This study tested the general proposition that MPAs affected assemblages of algae and invertebrates between 0.0 and 0.5 m above the...

Anthropogenic harvesting pressure and changes in life history: insights from a rocky intertidal limpet.

The importance of large breeding individuals for maintaining the health of marine fish and invertebrate populations has long been recognized. Unfortunately, decades of human harvesting that preferentially remove larger individuals have led to drastic reductions in body sizes of many of these species. Such size-selective harvesting is particularly worrisome for sequentially hermaphroditic specie...
